thanks very much Todd, i have been pretty fortunate lately and i do not take that for granted. Now, as my wife reminds me, if i can just make some decent music with the damned things instead of writing about them, i'll be golden...

Actually it looks exactly like a Sabre pickup from a preEB Sabre - the coils and poles are the exact size and spacing. The pickup cover is different in outer shape but the mounting screws are in the exact same places.

Smart-ass response aside, i lucked out for sure though the credit really goes first to Ken (and G&L of course) for making factory inventory lists available and second to Greg/Rocket Music for continuing to stay on top of the lists and moving quickly/following up.

They are just basic L-2000 pickups with the adjustable steel poles replaced with same size Alnico 5 poles. Think Musicman style. Oh! And they obviously don't need the big ceramic magnet on the bottom of the coils. The number of turns per bobbin is the same for both types (5,000). I did however make a few with slightly less turns (4,400) and I thought they sounded pretty cool but I believe the final decision was to stay at 5,000 turns.

Which makes sense. The plastic cover remains the same, probably the bobbins too. Would be interesting to see the underside of one. No magnet, no plate. Pretty decent weight saving right there,

Did Paul feel it provided a "mellower" sound than the ceramic MFD (like the L vs M preamps) or is that just my imagination?
