Wunkay Pix!

OMG!!! Mode, that is. This is the forum for a true G&L monster, the L-1000. Simple, passive, and huge, the Wunkay speaks volumes for the G&L sound.

Wunkay Wuvers is hosted by Dukeplaysbass, a Los Angeles pro player and L-1000 expert.

No sales or advertisements, no matter how well veiled, are permitted - not even a pointer elsewhere.

Hey Alex!

First of all, welcome!

I do remember those two!

The super early/minty one (ebony board) came from under a bed in Sierra Madre, CA.

The other one came from Norman's Rare Guitars. I walked in and Norm said, "Oh good. I got the perfect bass for you -- buy this thing and get it out of my store." So I bought it. It was a great player axe...

Glad to see you still have them! I forgot about the Treasure of the Sierra Madre but I was just thinking the other day about the one I got from Norm...

1980 Hog/Ebony and 1981 Ash/Maple. The '80 is a very early body date, June 22 1980. I found out through the G&L registry that it was previously owned by DKWilkins and Brad Traweek. The '81 I bought locally, don't know the history on it but it was also put in the registry by a previous owner (not the guy I bought it from). These both have a ton of tone and character. The '80 has a fat bottom without sounding muddy. The '81 is quite heavy but sounds killer with Chromes on it - I've had the same set installed for several years.

These are my 81-82 wunkays, along with a 2008 BABP re-issue. I have another ash/maple slotpole that is currently in the possession of my niece in Nashville. I've not played the two center basses in a band mix, but the two white ones, maple/ebony on the left and mahogany/maple board on the right (with TI flats) have very different voices. All these basses are well under 10 lbs, the one in Nashville is under 9 lbs.

I like the first on the right, at the bottom, and the third ( mahogany natural finish )

I feel I have one of the nicest Wunkays still around. I bought this from a nice chap on Talkbass who was selling the bass as he had given money to charity to help a friend. It took a while to organise the import and took even longer for the delivery, but it was well worth it.

I was hankering after an early Wunkay with the smooth head, chrome front loaded controls and, most importantly for me, a maple fingerboard.

The colour is more Teale than the blue in the photos and the neck more mellowed gold - it definitely looks better in the flesh. Seems like it's had an easy life as there's barely a mark on it and it plays like butter.

I am a very proud owner.

Here's a fine example of an 83. You folks culled all of the light ones but the tone from this bass is worth ever extra ounce.
