How Not To #1 - Soldering

Postby deltafred » Fri Mar 04, 2011 6:27 pm

Our guitarist buys old cheap beat up Fenders (guitars) and restores them. I don't know much about this one but think it is a Sunn Mustang. "Can you check the pickups as it does not seem to be working" was his request.

I am not really surprised that it is not working, I have never seen so much bad soldering in such a small area before. The PVC insulation on most of the wires is missing or fried and I would not have believed that you could get that much solder on the back of one pot, the one on the right is non too clever either, might need a shot of switch cleaner  .

Oh my....

That's kinda like the old adage, "If one drop is good, a whole bucket oughta be better."

They don't make enough de-soldering braid for that much mess.

I didn't use much de-soldering braid (not that I use it anyway, I have a pump) cutters are good for this type of work.

The pots and all the wiring went straight in the bin. The switch was intermittent but after stripping, cleaning, and a drop of lube it is good as new. The 3 pickups were all ok. The caps test out ok.

I forgot to ask how much he paid for it, I don't suppose it was much.

He paid £15, about $24 for it.

It is a Sunn Mustang and has the FMIC stamp on it.
