From left to right: '82 L2000e, '83 SB-2 in three tone 'burst, and another '83 SB-2 in rare Bahama Blue. I'd love to know how many were made in the three tone sunburst and Bahama Blue. Does anyone know if/where that information exists?

Thanks!

Nice looking herd you got there.

Production logs from that period were hand written in a spiral-bound notebook, and that notebook was spirited away by Dale Hyatt when he retired in the (I believe) early 90s. Mr. Hyatt has since passed and I do not know who now holds those logs (maybe Gabe Dellevigne?). I don't know that there is any historical record other than those logs and I don't think the logs showed production counts.

Sorry.

The registry at guitars by leo is where I look for that sort of info. It's a voluntary list so most G&Ls aren't listed but if you see a good number you can assume it wasn't rare.

Thanks for the responses Ken and bdgotoh. I checked the guitars by Leo registry and found 6 of these in Bahama Blue, but, like you said, the registry relies on G&L enthusiasts to contribute data.

If anybody comes across that spiral bound notebook... Well, that would be pretty cool!

It's nice, in a way, that early G&L instruments have not attained the collector status that early Fender instruments have. Imagine if my "custom/rare color pre-BBE G&L SB-2 in excellent original condition" was a "custom/rare color pre-CBS Fender Jazz Bass in excellent original condition"??? Well, I wouldn't own it, as the price tag would be 5 figures (as opposed to the very modest 3 figures I pad for this bass, lol).

My L-5000, bought new in '95. The knobs have been swapped to black and the tuner heads and bridge saddles are painted flat black. Strung with DR black beauties.

Just arrived on Thursday and after some minor tweaks to the setup and pickup height I'm back to getting acclimated to a 5 string again and finding that a 1" surgical extension of the fingers on my left hand would be most useful at the moment. ;) Great bass. Great value. Along with the ASAT Special I bought this spring I'm pleased to add it to a PBass and a JBass and several Teles as one of the last of Leo's tremendous gifts to musicians.
