So to summarize...

The dangers of not using a correct tool for truss rod adjustments are real.

A tool that will safely work will be:
Wiha 33438 4 x 350mm Hex T-handle
or
Wera 013333 4 x 350mm Hex T-handle

I actually don't have a T Handle for doing this and I think that buying one for under $15 would be good insurance.. Buying one now.

Good info. Fyi i first bought the Wiha 4mm x 200mm T-handle and it is too short; doesn't clear the tuning posts to sit squarely in the truss opening. But it is a high-quality tool and a good addition to my toolbox. I'll likely be ordering the longer 350mm as you recommend.
