Changing pick-up on a LB-100

Postby pete11426 » Fri Jul 20, 2018 3:33 am

Hi everyone! I have a big question!! I’m having some problem with my original pick-up. At no-cost, my local store offered me to upgrade my pick-up. I don’t know what to go for... Fender Custom Shop 58 or another Fender Custom shop...Seymour Dungan (maybe a Steve Harris since I love jamming some Maiden)... Di Marzio... or I stick with a G&L... So, any input could help!! Thanks!!

I've tried a lot of different pickups in my Precision, so not in a G&L but as the LB100 basically is a Precision, it should be the same.

What pickups you should choose, comes to down to what sound you are looking for. I don't know which Seymour Duncan's or Di Marzio's you can choose? The SD Antiquity and Vintage will sound (more or less) the same as the Fender Custom shops. The traditional P-bass sound. While the SD Quarter Pound (and probably the Steve Harris as well) will produce a crisper sound.

After having tried a lot of pickups in my P-bass, my favourite (besides the original pups, which I put back in after 10-15 years) were the Di Marzio Model P. It's kind of hard to describe the tone, but I would say it's somewhere right between a standard P-bass pup and an MFD pup. With volume all the way up, it's "gnarly and growly", with the knob a little bit back it's "vintagy". A very versatile pickup (and the cream coloured looks great).

Thanks P-punk. I'll keep doing research and check for the Di Marzio Model P.

Yeah, there's a ton of different P pickups out there to choose from, so it really depends on what you're looking for. I have a Fralin standard wind P in mine. Sound is much thumpier and fuller in the low end than the stock, though it is important to note that my LB-100 is the first run from the 90s with the Gotoh pickups. The factory LB-100 pickups are basically overwound by 5% from a standard P wind (10,500 winds vs. Fender-spec 10,000 winds), so something to keep in mind.
