USA L-2500 String Thru?

Hey there!

I think I've noticed that the recent USA L-2500s are no longer string thru! Can someone confirm this? Or are there just two types of USA L-2500s being setup now?

Thanks!

All the 5 strings are going back to top load only. There was the possibility of problems top loading with only the two screws holding the bridge down, which was why G&L always recommended thru-body stringing. Some years ago (2009?) I did what has come to be known as Ken's Bridge Mod which made a huge difference in sustain (even compared to thru-body) and was pretty well received. A few years later and Cort started doing top load only on the Tributes. G&L USA has been working it into their basses for a while now.

Look at it this way: You'll get normal bass sustain and it's a LOT easier to buy strings.

Hey Ken,
I just got a beautiful 2001 Honeyburst L-2500, so it is of course a string-thru.

I don't need to re-string her yet, but are regular long scale strings are ok for the string-thru, or do you find that extra long scale are needed?

Also, I am very much a G&L n00b. Can you explain a bit about the sustain between stringing string-thru vs top load? I would think string-thru is superior but I've noticed in the forums that many prefer the top load.

Thanks!

I'm sure it's very nice, but until we see pics this is just a figment of our collective imaginations. We need something to drool over. Besides, it's a rule.

Edit: It has been brought to my attention that there are indeed images of this bass. It therefore exists. OTOH, pics of the whole instrument would be nice. I'll withhold my drooling for a bit.

It will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer; sometimes even within a line of strings. If you get something that is known to work with 35" scales (think Lakland), you should be fine. Give this thread a look. There may be something in there to help.

Welcome to the addiction!

In the case of 5 string G&L basses with the Saddle Lock bridge, any difference between thru-body and top load will be slight with the thru-body maybe getting a small edge. If you convert to top load with the Bridge Mod, sustain really improves. You know the difference in tone you hear on the B and E string as you play up the neck, with it being more lively and sharper sounding out at the end and kind of muffling as you move up above 6th or 7th positions? With the mod it usually stays lively and sharp most of the way up. Sustain won't be quite like an open string, but it'll be close.

That help?

Ken...
