So what G&L Bass really is the Holy Grail?

There certainly were some creative minds at work at the G&L factory in the old days. An incredible amount of models to choose from. So what bass is the number 1 most collectible?

You kinda have to define Holy Grail.

If you're talking collectible, then most any of the old "Rarebirds" would qualify; L5000, Interceptor, the Leo Fender Commemorative ASAT. These were produced in low enough numbers that they're generally thought of as collectible.

OTOH, if you look at some of the low-production iterations on the more common basses, you'll find some really cool instruments that are interchangeably referred to as Rarebird or just sought after. Examples here might be the passive El Toro (which really are pretty rare), painted mahogany El Toros (most are burst), slot-pole L-2000 basses; you get the idea. The L-1000, as revered as it is, was a pretty common bass.

Provenance will also help here. Who has owned the beast over the years? Or was it a closet queen, kinda like the mythical '57 Chevy that was only driven to and from church by a little old lady in Phoenix.

Now if you're talking about the holy grail as being the biggest, meanest, most badass bass machine going, then it's the L-2000. Pretty much hands down.

For playing, my Holy Grail is a 1997 L-2000, ash body and rosewood #5 neck.

For collectability I remember a one-off solid mahogany ASAT bass that Frankensteinberger had for awhile.

For collectability/ rare, a back-loader Interceptor with a factory Kahler vibrato bridge. or a L-5000. Brad's 'hog Toro is pretty darn rare, too.

Personal grail- slot-pole L-2000E's with the first-gen pre-amp. For me, that's the Voice of God

- and He wants to have a word with you....NOW!

I'd like to know how many ASAT B5 basses are out there in the wild. The number I keep hearing is 3. Here's one. It came with a spare maple fretless neck. The burst looks way better in person.
