L2000 pre, M2000 pup mismatch?

We are fortunate to count Paul Gagon as a member here, so it seemed natural to give him a home to stretch out in and relax a little. Maybe exercise the grey matter and present a little history of the guitar and bass (amps too!) from his perspective as one of the eminent designers of our time.

Got questions? Great! Good questions might be, "What are the EQ mappings for the M Series preamps?" Or, "What was the thought process behind the MJ-4?" Troubleshooting questions should remain in the regular forums (he reads those too). Finally, please be mindful of how I feel about tech questions via PM or email.

L2000 pre, M2000 pup mismatch?

Postby 59jazz » Sun Oct 24, 2021 10:23 am

I was looking for a project bass, when I found this USACG p/j bass with G&L electronics on TB. The bass is very lite weight and comfortable to play, but really lacks what my G&L basses have; low end. The bass has an L2000 1.3 preamp and M2000 pickup mounted in the SR4/Kiloton sweetspot. I've read several articles (some from here) on ways to increase the low end by adding a .001uf cap to the center lug of the bass control pot. Upon inspecting the control cavity, I found a 102J cap (.001uf?) and a .0022uf/222j cap sharing the same center lug on the bass control. Is this all that can be done to increase the low end? Would it be beneficial to swap out the M2000 pup for an L2000 pup? To be honest, I could do with out the pre and go all passive with this bass. Would an L1000 circuit be a better option and give this bass more girth?
Thank you in advance!

Adding a .1µf 50v poly cap from the signal chain to ground will provide a decent sized treble cut. It doesn't add low end but cuts treble, which is perceived as a bass increase.

The M pickup is not well matched to the L preamp. The M Series pickups are de-tuned (if you will) for a good match with the M preamp. Using an L Series pickup in this config would provide a bigger sound and more flexibility in where you might want to take this bass. For example, you could take it totally passive and duplicate the L-1000 circuit.

Thanks so much Ken! I'll try the L1000/L2000 pickup 1st, then maybe go with the L1000 harness.
