My understanding is that the aluminum posts were developed when Dale Hyatt was fighting neck-dive on the ASAT bass prototype in 1989. Dale was trying to shave weight, including a 1 1/2 inch neck, and Helmut Schaller provided some aluminum posts which soon after replaced the brass tapered posts on all G&L basses. When they were in stock, at least. The story of the prototype ASAT bass is http://www.yowhatsshakin.com/yowhatsshakin/G%26L_ASAT_Bass_proto.html

Are your straight post tuners stamped Schaller, or G&L?
