Project: What to do?

OMG!!! Mode, that is. This is the forum for a true G&L monster, the L-1000. Simple, passive, and huge, the Wunkay speaks volumes for the G&L sound.

Wunkay Wuvers is hosted by Dukeplaysbass, a Los Angeles pro player and L-1000 expert.

No sales or advertisements, no matter how well veiled, are permitted - not even a pointer elsewhere.

What should I do with this?

Harvest it for the parts you need and sell off the rest.

Project: What to do?

Postby dukeplaysbass » Sun Sep 06, 2015 4:25 pm

Picked up this poor kitten off FleaBay. Neck broken at the headstock, poor repair, amateur finish (it probably left the factory trans blue from the pair traces on the neck and way down in the control cavity). It was repined at least once, maybe twice, before the strip job happened. But the rest of it (except a few screws) is original.

Much to my surprise,t the bass actually sounds good, and the neck seems stable.

Originally, I bought it to harvest for parts; I've been thinking of doing a 51 Precision Warmoth/USACG build with a MFD and Wunkay circuit.

It also occurred to me to refinish it, probably in burgundy mist.

I could also just put it back together and sell it to one of you cats. Like I don't have enough to do around here….

It'll make a good fall project, so let me know what you think….

It would be ideal just as it is for some of the dives that we play, no stage and so cramped that you cannot move without crashing the headstock into something. Also slightly less desirable to the light fingered punter than some nice shiny new model.

On top of that it would really annoy our guitarist looking like something that just came out of a trash can, but it would be nice in burgundy mist.

Wait a minute. Burgundy Mist? This Wunkay has had the shit kicked out of it and you'd paint it Burgundy Mist?! That sounds awfully pretty for this old guy. Think of the old neighborhood tomcat. One eye half shut, a snaggle tooth, bent tail, notches torn out of his ears, and a look on his face of, "BRING IT!"; would he want to be painted Burgundy Mist?

You don't see many cracked headstocks on these. But that one has been through the ringer a couple of times...

Yeah, this one has been pounded. You gotta get a lot of force on it to crack the neck like that.

I got Pat Wilkins to do a beautiful Mary Kay finish -- I'll take a pic tomorrow for y'all.
