L-1000 Neck?

OMG!!! Mode, that is. This is the forum for a true G&L monster, the L-1000. Simple, passive, and huge, the Wunkay speaks volumes for the G&L sound.

L-1000 Neck?

Postby Extra Blue » Tue Jul 07, 2015 3:08 am

Hello all,
Long time lurker, first time post here.
Earlier this year I sold my '81 L-1000. I loved the look, and sound of that instrument, but I just couldn't get comfortable with the neck. With a few exceptions, just about all the basses I've played over the years have had slim jazz-type necks. The L-1000 was 1.75" at the nut, and always felt really chunky.
The story should end here, but lately I've got gas for another Leo era G&L. Is there such a thing as an '80's L-1000 (or any early G&L bass) with a 1.5' nut?

They put a 1 1/2" neck on the SB2 in the late 80's and it would have been optional for other basses but I've never seen an early wunkay with this neck.

I have a 2008 re-issue l-1000 with a #8 1 1/2" neck, but an early 80s one would, I believe, be difficult to impossible to find.

Oh, and according to Greg Gagliano's page, http://www.ggjaguar.com/gnl.htm, the ASAT bass introduced in 1990 also had a 1 1/2" neck as standard.

The early 1.5 neck is the Holy Grail.
I think there were some from the mid- to late 80s with the 1.5 flavor.
I'll ask a friend who is partial to them; I seem to recall that he had tracked this at one point....

Heard back from my friend. He says he has no knowledge of any 1.5" necks (which are the #6 and #8 flavors in G&L neck nomenclature) on Wunkay's during the pre-BBE period.
He did say he has seen one 1989 and one 1990 L-2000 with those necks. So they did make them (at least by 89) but may not have been installed on the L-1000.
That said, I always got the impression that Leo was a customer service friendly guy -- that is, if you were willing to pay for it, he'd make it.
So, they may be out there....
The search (always) continues....
