What Powers Your G&L ?

A home for all the other parts of the happy equation that we call bass. Factory stuff, home built, kits - it's all good.

GLB, did you sell your Mesa head & cab and switch to the Marshall combo, or is it just an additional amp you picked up?

Edit: now your Marshall pics aren't showing anymore.... are you in amp limbo? :P

Methinks I'll ask about this.

Hi guys, The Mesa gear is sold off. The Marshall MB4410 combo took it's place.

If you don't mind my asking, why? You rarely hear much about Marshall bass gear, and you were really raving about your Mesa setup (although it was admittedly overkill for home use only). Do you prefer the sound of the Marshall to the Mesa, or was it a more a matter of selling the Mesa allowed you to get the Marshall and also pocket a decent chunk of change?

The Mesa did have a good cash back on it. I liked both sounds, but I preferred the 4X10 set up. For what it would have cost do the 4X10 Mesa cab, the MB4410 cost $150. less. And in a way the Marshall is a bit of over kill also @ 300 watts. Old roadies never learn, they just like the feel of the area shaking around them as they play. I just had another local dealer take on Marshall. They brought in the MB series, and they seem to be doing ok having the smaller MB amps in stock. Up to and including the 150 watt 15" Speaker amp.

This really is a great combination of bass and amp.

One thing that really helps the sound in my cave here, I move the amp to another location in the small room I'm exiled in. I'm getting less vibrations of things in the room, and can hear the notes more clear. The pictures on the walls are all crooked, but too BAD!

About this time last year I decided that my old Trace Elliot 15" combo just wasn't up to scratch. We run sound from the stage and I go out front on a 40 foot lead and check the sound balance and PA EQ. As I walked out (still playing) I noticed that my bass just disappeared in places and where I could hear it the sound was pretty poor. Time for a new rig.

After a lot of research I almost bought a Barefaced but never quite pulled the trigger, I was close a few times.

I finally settled on building a fEARful 15/6 with a 4U airhead to take a separate power amp and pre. A Peavey IPR1600 PA amp provides plenty of power, about 320W from one side or 1050W bridged. I haven't tried it bridged yet, I will probably save that for an outdoor gig.

I am still looking for a suitable preamp, the rack in there just houses a DIY high pass filter to protect the driver from unloading below 35Hz. There are no tone controls other than on the bass so I am running "flat" so to speak. My L-2500 has no trouble lighting the Peavey clip light (ADT light).

I have done a couple of gigs with it now and cannot ever see me needing anything else. In hindsight a part of me wishes I had built a 12/6 instead purely for size reasons but what is done is done and I am delighted with it.
