No, I don't have any reservations about a used instrument. My first (and only, so far) bass guitar is a used Yamaha BBG4 that I bought to learn on. (picture in the "others" picture thread).

The problem is the availability of a used GnL in this area. I have watched craigs list as well as the local shops and GnL gear doesn't come through too often. I did play a black Tribute L2500 (new) in a local shop a couple of months back but it is long gone. My long term goal is a US GnL with my exact configuration so used isn't really an option for that.

For the interim bass, I could get a number of 5 stringers for under $500 that would work just fine. Even as low as $300 and that was my original thought. That is why I was considering the Ibanez. But, since I can get a new Tribute for not that much more and it would have the look and feel and sound of what I think I want ultimately, it seems as if that would be the best move at this time. If I bought something other than a GnL I would still be wondering what playing a GnL regularly would sound/feel like. I don't know anyone who has one and none of the shops regularly stocks them. Special orders only.

If there were used Tributes available for a bargain, I would go for it. I just checked ebay and found ONE used L2500 tribute for $520 (starting bid). All the rest are new at $750-799. For the same "new" price I would rather buy from a local shop, get the color I choose with a warranty.

There are a couple of used Tribute L-2500s at Buffalo Bros. $575 each. Could probably be bested with a CL deal, but there's this and, most importantly, this.

There are a lot of good G&L dealers around, but Buffalo Bros. gets my business.

Thanks for the pointer to Buffalo Bros, Ken. I think I might stop in and check them out the next time I am in the southern part of the state. I have a sister in San Diego. Meanwhile, it's water under the bridge as I have already ordered from my local shop and they are getting me my new Tribute L2500 for a price equal to the online sites so I am satisfied with that.

Pics will be posted when it arrives. I think this bass along with my SWR WorkingPro 12 is going to make a sweet combination for me. I can't wait to give it a test drive!

I have both a Tribute and USA L2500 bass, and both of them are keepers. In a way, they both have to be keepers: the Tribute is fretted and the USA is fretless. :D
The Tribby (black with rosewood fingerboard) I bought used from eBay, the USA is a BABP LE with the blackburst body and ebony 'board.

Purely in terms of tone, they both sound the same to me; loud and proud. I can feel a difference in necks between the two; the USA neck just falls to hand better than the Tribute, but not by much. In short, I can't believe just how quality an instrument the Tribute is compared to the USA model. You may never get rid of your Tribute, even if you eventually get a USA bass.

I also have an SWR Workingman's 12, and just to warn you my G&L basses can easily overwhelm it if I don't follow the rules of correct G&L volume and tone knob technique (as talked about elsewhere).

I live down in the San Diego area, and every once in a while I make my way over to Buffalo Bros. just to gawk at the G&L selection. AND the other guitars, too.

I have been playing the L2500 for a few days now and am really enjoying it. My brain sometimes messes up and my fingers end up shifted over one string but it is getting better. The odd this is I picked up the Yamaha today and realized as I played it that it felt like something just wasn't right...where is that other string?

Uh Oh! I think I have been infected by the 5 string virus. :o

I'm going to a party tomorrow and there will be other musicians and basically an open mic for those that want to get together and jam. I was going to play it safe and take the Yamaha, but, have now decided that this will be the first public appearance of my new L2500. I may mess up a few times with the fiver but we are all friends, I will be forgiven.

I agree, take the 5 string. I am sure your friends will probably not notice most of your mistakes as long as you are only 1 string adrift. Just make sure you get moved to the correct string as quick as possible and don't show in your face that you messed up.

Yup. That's always been one of my policies. Blind 'em with brilliance or baffle 'em with bullshit. That and screw up with authority!
